The death toll from the shooting on Thursday (07/28/2011) between government forces and Abu Sayyaf group linked to al-Qaeda in the southern Philippine island of Sulu province rose to 37 people, said military spokesman on Friday (07/29/2011 ).
At least seven soldiers, including a junior naval officer, were killed while 26 others were wounded in the fighting. All soldiers were killed and injured soldiers were flown to the nearest port town, Zamboanga.
Admiral Armando Guzman, naval commander for Western Mindanao, said the additional troops, including a trained Light Reaction Unit of the U.S. and marines, joined in the pursuit of the remnants of more than 70 armed men in military intercepted Thursday Patikul town, Sulu. "The operation had driven pursuit of the terrorists," said Guzman told reporters.
Guzman said the attack had also succeeded in secret ambush of an Abu Sayyaf camp that lies between two mountains, and fortified by a thick forest.
"The arrest of Abu Sayyaf camp has the effect of demoralizing to the group so the ability to attack their power declined," said Guzman.
Abu Sayyaf, which is active in the southern Philippines, founded in 1990 and has conducted a number of high-level attacks, including kidnappings, bombings and beheadings. Philippine military estimates that Abu Sayyaf now has fewer than 400 members.
